Habemus Papam!!

(updating post as I get new information)

Jorge Mario Bergoglio is elected the 266th Bishop of Rome.

Cardinal Bergoglio has taken the name of Pope Francis (some are referring to him as Pope Francis I – I don’t know if you are the first to take a name, whether you include “the 1st” or not).  I am learning as much about him as I can as quickly as possible.  He is (was) the Cardinal of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He is, from what I hear, a strong defender of Catholic doctrine and social values (traditional marriage, pro-life, etc).  According to reports, he has a simple and humble personal life.

By some information on traditionalist sites, he was far from a traditionalist cardinal, kind of an “anti-Ratzinger” pope.  Hopefully Summorum Pontificum does well under him.

Pope Francis is 76 years old, so the “Vatican experts” who predicted a “young, vigorous pope” were incorrect.

Habemus Papam!

Before giving his first papal blessing, Pope Francis requested that everything ask God to bless the pope.

May God bless His Holiness, Pope Francis, and the Catholic Church.

Edit:  I am getting a number of searches leading to my blog on “Jorge Mario Bergoglio and the SSPX” (Society of Saint Pius X).  The Society of Saint Pius X has released an official statement on their website HERE (their main USA page), which follows:

The new successor of St. Peter, Bishop of Rome, Supreme Pontiff and Vicar of Christ, has just been announced at the Vatican by the Cardinal Protodeacon, His Eminence Jean-Louis Tauran.

The conclave has elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina as the Sovereign Pontiff, who has taken the name of Pope Francis.

Let us pray for the new Holy Father, that he will fulfill the duty of his papal office and properly govern, protect and promote the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I do not know of any history of Pope Francis I and the SSPX.  If you do, and have any links to have, please provide them in the comments below!

Disclaimer:  I do not attend an SSPX chapel.  I have nothing against the SSPX, and did attend an SSPX chapel as a child.  Please search my blog if you want more information on that.

More to come…
